What is Holistic Mental Health, and How Can It Help Me?

holistic mental health

In our fast-paced, modern world, mental health challenges have become increasingly common. Many people find themselves grappling with stress, anxiety, depression, and a sense of unfulfillment despite their achievements. Counseling or therapy has become an important tool in many people’s lives, helping them to strengthen coping mechanisms, resilience, and sometimes helping uncover distorted perceptions and beliefs. But the road to wellness does not just end at the counselor’s office. In order to get the most out of your mental health journey, it’s important you consider how a holistic mental health plan can benefit you.

In this blog we will discuss what holistic mental health is, how it can help you, and what steps you can take to implement a more holistic approach to your own mental health.

Understanding Holistic Mental Health

Holistic mental health is an approach that considers the whole person, not just their symptoms. It integrates various aspects of an individual’s life, including physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. By addressing these interconnected areas, holistic mental health aims to promote overall wellness and balance. It’s easy to understand from an example why it may be important to consider mental health from a holistic perspective: you may develop good coping skills for managing your emotions, but if your social life is empty you are likely to feel depressed and lonely, despite your best efforts in one area.

The Core Principles of Holistic Mental Health

  1. Physical Well-being: The body and mind are deeply interconnected. Physical health directly impacts mental health. Studies have shown this, time and again. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful substances are fundamental components of holistic mental health treatment.
  2. Mental and Emotional Health: Understanding and managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors is crucial. This can involve traditional therapy, holistic mental health counseling, mindfulness practices, and other techniques to promote mental clarity and emotional stability.
  3. Social Connections: Humans are inherently social beings. Healthy relationships and social interactions play a significant role in mental well-being. Building a supportive network of family, friends, and community can provide a sense of belonging and support.
  4. Spirituality: For many, spirituality provides a sense of purpose and meaning in life. This doesn’t necessarily mean religion; it can also encompass a connection to nature, meditation, or personal philosophies that provide inner peace and fulfillment.
  5. Lifestyle and Environment: The environment we live in and our daily habits profoundly influence our mental health. Creating a healthy, supportive environment and adopting positive lifestyle choices are essential for holistic well-being.

How Holistic Mental Health Can Help You

Embracing a holistic approach to mental health can offer numerous benefits. By addressing multiple facets of your life, holistic mental health treatment provides a more comprehensive approach to well-being, leading to more effective and lasting results compared to traditional methods that focus only on symptoms as they arise. Evaluating your life through a holistic lens may help you improve areas that are lacking before a crisis forces you to improve.

A holistic approach encourages individuals to take an active role in their healing process, boosting self-esteem and providing a greater sense of control over one’s life. You may have heard the phrase, “a rising tide lifts all boats”. While normally used in the sense of economic improvement, it’s an apt metaphor for the effect of a holistic mental health approach.

When you improve physical well-being you may experience improved energy levels, which may increase willingness to socialize, or practice mindfulness. Developing close friends may inspire an individual to take better care of themselves, or improve their environment and lifestyle. And improving mental health can help reduce resistance to all health-benefiting behaviors. In other words, when we work in one area of our lives, we see benefits in all. By evaluating our lives in a holistic manner we begin to see where the weak links may be that are affecting our overall life story, and we can take steps to improve our satisfaction in all areas of life.

Practical Steps to Embrace Holistic Mental Health

Incorporating holistic principles into your life can be achieved through several practical steps. The first step is to evaluate, by yourself or with a counselor, the areas of your life that are flourishing, and those that could use some attention.

Then take small, manageable steps towards a concrete goal.

For example, you could start with simple mindfulness exercises or meditation practices, as even a few minutes each day can help reduce stress and increase mental clarity. Your goal could be 20 minutes of sitting meditation each week, for 2 weeks. Or if physical health is a concern, find a form of exercise that you enjoy and incorporate it into your weekly routine, whether it’s walking, yoga, swimming, or dancing. Your starting goal may be 20 minutes of light exercise, 2 days a week. You could plan a weekly call with a friend or family member who is far away, or attend a board game, trivia night, or other similar weekly event to improve your social life. Or you could reduce your screen time, replacing “online socializing” with in-person.

Whatever you do, start small and be consistent. Don’t try to do everything at once. And once you’ve integrated this new habit, see if there’s room for more! By slowly and organically building up positive habits you’ll start to see improvements in all areas of your life. It’s worth noting that your goals don’t have to include more responsibility or self-discipline, if that’s a concern for you. You could schedule a weekly massage, spa day, or nature walk if that’s more your style.

Of course, you may find it helpful to discuss all of this with a counselor. Our counselors at the Truism Center will be happy to help you create and maintain positive momentum towards your holistic mental health goals. Reach out now to schedule an appointment.

The Role of Counseling in Holistic Mental Health

While a holistic approach encompasses various aspects of life, therapy or counseling remains a cornerstone. Mental health counseling can provide the following:

  1. Personalized Care: Counselors can tailor their approach to meet your specific needs, considering your physical health, lifestyle, and personal goals.
  2. Emotional Support: A counselor provides a safe space to explore your feelings, thoughts, and experiences. This emotional support can be crucial in understanding and managing your mental health.
  3. Skill Development: Through counseling, you can learn practical skills to cope with stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and relaxation exercises can be highly effective.
  4. Holistic Integration: Counselors can help you integrate holistic principles into your daily life. This might include developing healthier habits, improving relationships, and finding spiritual fulfillment.
